An adrenaline autoinjector is a life-saving medical device for patients with severe allergic reactions. Moreover, this medical device can be used by healthcare professionals and people who aren’t medically trained. However, when it comes to autoinjector usage, many people don’t know how to use it correctly.

Therefore, it is essential to provide proper safety training using an autoinjector training device. This particular training device contains no active drug and is used for skill-boosting training. This guide will cover what an adrenaline autoinjector is and the correct procedure for using it.

What is an Adrenaline Autoinjector?

Adrenaline autoinjectors are used in the medical sector to treat a severe allergic reaction, i.e., anaphylaxis, in case of emergency. These medical devices are designed to inject a single, fixed dose of adrenaline into the patient. The injected adrenaline treats low blood pressure and poor circulation in the patient’s body. In addition, it helps relax the lungs enabling the patient to breathe and reduce swelling, skin rashes, and itching.

Stepwise Procedure to use an Adrenaline Autoinjector

Although this device can be used by any individual, he must know the correct procedure. A person can use an autoinjector training device before using an actual autoinjector. Here is the procedure that needs to be followed for using an adrenaline autoinjector:

  1. Lay the patient flat on the ground, and if he can’t breathe properly, then he can sit on the ground.
  2. Take the carry tube and remove the autoinjector from it. An individual must keep his fingers and thumb away from the orange tip.
  3. Hold the adrenaline autoinjector firmly in the fist with the orange tip facing down and pull off the blue safety release.
  4. An individual needs to hold the patient’s leg still and place the orange end of the autoinjector against the outer mid-thigh. The autoinjector should be held at the right angle to the outer part of the patient’s thigh.
  5. It’s possible to give the injection through clothing but make sure to avoid pockets or seams.
  6. The person needs to push down firmly until he feels or hears a click and hold for 3 seconds.
  7. After giving the injection, remove the adrenaline autoinjector.
  8. Record the time the injection was given to the patient.
  9. Call the ambulance and give the first aid necessary for treating anaphylaxis.

If the patient doesn’t respond 5 minutes after giving the first dose of adrenaline, then healthcare professionals recommend giving more doses of adrenaline. Moreover, adrenaline can also be given to the patient when unsure if he has anaphylaxis or asthma.

Conclusion

Although an adrenaline autoinjector is a life-saving device for people suffering from a severe allergy, knowing how to use it correctly is crucial. It is why healthcare professionals provide training to patients or their family members using an autoinjector training device. Knowing how to use this medical device can save lives even for a few seconds. Although the device is just being used for training purposes, always get it from reputed manufacturers and check if it has passed the expiry date.
